Who

Christian scholar of Palestine who lived at Emmaus (Nicopolis) and wrote the first Christian world chronicle, the Chronographies, of which fragments survive. His Letter to Aristides explains why Matthew and Luke give Joseph different fathers: by levirate marriage one father was Joseph's by nature and the other by law. The explanation, passed on by Eusebius, became the Church's usual answer.
