Who

Carthaginian convert and the first great theologian to write in Latin, who gave the West its words for Trinity, person and substance. The Apology, Against Marcion, Against Praxeas, On the Flesh of Christ, On Baptism and On Prayer survive from more than thirty works; in later life he joined the Montanists and he was never counted a saint. He insists that Christ took real flesh from Mary and sets the believing Virgin against Eve, but he denied her virginity in and after childbirth, so the chain quotes him with care.
