The council of 217 African bishops held at Carthage in 419 under Aurelius, with Augustine present, which gathered the canons of the earlier African councils (Hippo 393, Carthage 397 and after) into the Code of Canons of the African Church. Its canon 24 lists the books of Scripture with the deuterocanonical books, its Pelagian canons of 418 define original sin and the need of grace, and the affair of the presbyter Apiarius made it resist appeals to Rome that rested on the Sardican canons mistaken for Nicene.
