CommentRabanus MaurusPublic domainMatthew 4:3–4

This verse is quoted from Deuteronomy. [margin note: c. 8. 3] Whoso then feeds not on the Word of God, he lives not; as the body of man cannot live without earthly food, so cannot his soul without God’s word. This word is said to proceed out of the mouth of God, where he reveals His will by Scripture testimonies.

Reproduced in full. Translation: Oxford 1841 (Newman), public domain (Public domain).
