Aaron

Who

Moses’ elder brother and spokesman (Exodus 4:14), anointed the first high priest of Israel with his sons after him (Exodus 28–29; Leviticus 8). He made the golden calf, and was forgiven. When his priesthood was challenged, his rod “had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds” overnight (Numbers 17:8), and it was kept in the Ark. Hebrews contrasts his priesthood with Christ’s, yet holds him up as one “called by God” (Hebrews 5:4). Elizabeth was “of the daughters of Aaron” (Luke 1:5). The hymns of the Eastern Church call Mary the rod of Aaron that blossomed without seed.

Key verses

  2. Exodus 28:1

“Bring Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, near to you from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office: Aaron, with Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

  3. Numbers 17:8

On the next day, Moses went into the Tent of the Testimony; and behold, Aaron’s rod for the house of Levi had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.
