Who

Byzantine monk and the greatest theologian of the seventh century, who opposed the imperial monothelite compromise, was tried, mutilated and died in exile in the Caucasus in 662. The Ambigua, the Questions to Thalassius and the Mystagogy read the Fathers, above all Gregory of Nazianzus and Dionysius, into a vision of the whole creation gathered into Christ. A Life of the Virgin preserved in Georgian is attributed to him. Some of the "Maximus" citations in the Catena Aurea may belong instead to Maximus of Turin, a fifth-century preacher.
