Why it matters
Only after giving his mother to the disciple does Jesus know that everything is accomplished and say 'It is finished.' Pitre stresses the order: the gift of Mary as mother is part of the finished work of the cross, not an afterthought. Making her Mother of the Church is one of the last things Jesus does before he dies.
