Why it matters
Matthew calls the woman he had just named 'the mother of James and Joses' simply 'the other Mary.' Pitre's lead argument on the brothers of Jesus rests on this identification (pp 105–106): the mother of the first two 'brothers' is a Mary who is not the mother of Jesus, alive at the tomb on Easter morning. She cannot be a dead first wife of Joseph, and her sons are Jesus' kinsmen.
