The father of the Virgin Mary according to the tradition first written in the Protoevangelium of James (second century), which tells of the birth of Mary to Joachim and Anne in their old age. Scripture does not name Mary’s parents. The Church honours Joachim and Anne together on 26 July, and John Damascene praises them in his homily on the Nativity of Mary.
