On the line of Christ

Mary, Mother of God

Who

The Virgin of Nazareth, betrothed to Joseph, to whom the angel Gabriel announced that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and bear the Son of the Most High, and who answered, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:26–38). From her “was born Jesus, who is called Christ” (Matthew 1:16): the one genealogy runs through Joseph, but Christ’s flesh is hers alone. The Council of Ephesus (431) named her Theotokos, Mother of God. The Church confesses her ever-virgin, conceived without original sin, and taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. She stood by the cross, where her Son gave her to the beloved disciple (John 19:25–27), and prayed with the apostles before Pentecost (Acts 1:14). The Fathers hold that she too was of David’s line (Ignatius, To the Ephesians 18; compare Romans 1:3); tradition names her parents Joachim and Anne.
