On the line of Christ

Tamar

Who

The widow of Judah’s sons Er and Onan. When Judah withheld his third son from her, she veiled herself and conceived by Judah himself, who on seeing his pledge owned, “She is more righteous than I” (Genesis 38:26). She bore the twins Perez and Zerah, and through Perez the line runs to David. She is the first of the four women Matthew names in Christ’s genealogy (Matthew 1:3). John Chrysostom asks why the evangelist names her, and answers that Christ came not to flee our disgrace but to take it away: he did not disdain such ancestors, so that no one should despair of being welcomed.

Besides this, it shews that all are equally liable to sin; for here is Thamar accusing Judah of incest, and David begat Solomon with a woman with whom he had committed adultery. But if the Law was not fulfilled by…

  • Ambrose of Milan on Matthew 1:3–6 (2)Catena Aurea on Matthew

Observe that Matthew does not name both without a meaning; for though the object of his writing only required the mention of Phares, yet in the twins a mystery is signified; namely, the double life of the nations,…
