Who

Priest and preacher of Antioch from 386, patriarch of Constantinople from 398, deposed and exiled by court and episcopal enemies, and dead on the road in 407; "golden-mouthed", and a Doctor of the Church. His homilies on Matthew, John, Romans, Corinthians and Hebrews are the largest body of Greek biblical exposition to survive, plain in method and moral in aim. The Catena Aurea quotes him more than any other Greek Father, and the chain follows his readings of Cana and of the Annunciation.

See of Constantinople, 398–404.
