Who
Prefect of Rome who became a monk, then pope from 590, the last of the four Latin Doctors and the pope who sent Augustine of Canterbury to the English. The Pastoral Rule, the Dialogues, the Moralia on Job, the Homilies on the Gospels and on Ezekiel and a register of some 850 letters made him the teacher of the Middle Ages. Aquinas cites his Gospel homilies throughout the Catena Aurea, and the chain quotes them on the Visitation and the Magi.
