• 1 Corinthians 6:19

  The Christian's body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Pitre ends the Ark chapter with this verse (p 65): Jesus died and rose so that every person's body can be transformed by grace into a temple, and Mary's Assumption shows that bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven are not for Jesus alone but for us too.

• 1 Corinthians 9:5

  Paul mentions 'the brethren of the Lord' travelling with wives. Pitre lists the verse with Matthew 13:55 and Mark 3:31–35 as the biblical basis for the objection that Mary had other children (p 13). His answer in chapter 5 identifies these brethren with the sons of the other Mary and of Clopas, and notes that Hegesippus calls them the Lord's cousins.

• 1 Corinthians 15:45

  Paul calls Christ the last Adam and the second man from heaven. Pitre quotes this with Romans 5:18–19 as the premise of the whole New Eve chapter (p 20): once Jesus is seen as the new Adam, salvation is the undoing of the fall, and the question follows at once — if Jesus is the new Adam, who is the new Eve?
