2 Samuel 7:12

2 Samuel 7:12 (WEB)

When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

As quoted in the map (KJV)

2 Samuel 7:12–13 (KJV)

12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Key words

זֶרַעzera · Hebrew
'seed' — David's offspring, whom God will raise up.
כִּסֵּא מַמְלַכְתּוֹkisse mamlakhto · Hebrew
'the throne of his kingdom.'
עַד־עוֹלָםad-olam · Hebrew
'for ever' — the Davidic covenant is everlasting.

Why it matters

God covenants with David that his seed will sit on an everlasting throne. Gabriel echoes this promise word for word when he tells Mary her son will receive 'the throne of his father David' and reign 'for ever' (Luke 1:32–33). Pitre's logic follows: because Jesus is the Davidic king for ever, the Davidic office of queen mother is fulfilled, permanently, in the mother of the king.
