Why it matters

Mary is in the upper room with the apostles, praying with them before the coming of the Spirit. Pitre takes this as the sequel to John 19:27: the disciple took her as his own, and now she stands at the heart of the apostolic community as it becomes the Church. The mother of Jesus is present at the Church's birth as its mother.
