Key words

ἕως ἂν θῶheōs an thō · Greek
'till I make' — the Messiah sits at God's right hand 'until' his enemies are subdued, and plainly does not stop reigning afterward.

Why it matters

Jesus quotes Psalm 110:1: sit at my right hand 'until' I put your enemies under your feet. Pitre offers this as one of three parallels showing that 'until' in biblical language marks a period of time without implying a change afterward (p 101). So Matthew 1:25 — Joseph 'knew her not until' the birth — says nothing about what happened later, a point Protestant and Catholic scholars alike accept.
