Who
Translator of the Latin Vulgate and the most learned biblical scholar of the Latin church. When Helvidius claimed the 'brothers' of Jesus were Mary's children, Jerome answered him with a treatise that anchored the perpetual virginity in Scripture.
What Pitre quotes
- Letters 22.21 — 'Death came through Eve, but life has come through Mary' (p 37)
- Against Helvidius 21 — 'We believe that God was born of a Virgin, because we read it. That Mary was married after she brought forth, we do not believe, because we do not read it' (p 114)
- Against Helvidius 14 — identifies Clopas with Alphaeus — a step Pitre's own argument does not require (pp 109 (endnote))
