Church Fatherc. 315–403

Epiphanius of Salamis

Who

Bishop of Salamis in Cyprus and cataloguer of heresies. His Panarion condemns both those who worshipped Mary and those who insulted her — the two errors Pitre steers between.

What Pitre quotes

  • Panarion 78.23; 79.7–9 — against the Collyridians, who offered eucharistic bread (kollyra) to Mary: 'pure devil's work'; 'Mary is to be held in honor, but the Lord is to be worshiped!' — quoting Jeremiah on the queen of heaven (pp 87–88)
  • Panarion 78.6.1 — the 'Insulters of Mary' (Antidikomarianites), who denied her perpetual virginity, guilty of 'a novel madness' (p 114)
