Athanasius of Alexandria

Bishop of Alexandria and the great defender of the divinity of Christ at and after Nicaea; also the first to list the twenty-seven books of the New Testament. Pitre stresses that Protestants revere him, and that his statements about Mary come from his defence of Christ.

What Pitre quotes

  • Against the Arians 3.29 — one of the first indisputable uses of 'Mother of God' (Theotokos) — inside a treatise defending Jesus' divinity (p 82)
  • Against the Arians — Theotokos connected to Isaiah's prophecy of Immanuel (p 84)
